TIRE KNOWLEDGE NOTES

  4-5 4-5) Storage

Tires, including worn tires waiting for retreading, should be stored in a cool dry place indoors, so that there is no danger of water collection inside them. Ideally they should be kept in dark conditions but if this is not possible they should at least be protected from direct sunlight. Tires should not be on a rim and not inflated. Tires should not be stored close to high ozone concentrations which are produced by electrical generating equipment, switchgears or electrical motors.
Storage locations near heating devices such as radiators or hot pipes should be avoided. Tires should be stored on clean floor surfaces, free from grease, petrochemicals or other substances which could cause rubber to deteriorate.

Tires showing indications of cracking should be discarded
When white sidewall tires or white letter tires are stocked, care must be taken to avoid contamination between black and white rubbers, as this may produce discoloration of the white rubber during storage.

  4-6 4-6) Car tire repairs

A damaged or punctured tire may be repairable, depending upon the nature, extent, and location of the damage, and its wear condition.
Excessive or incorrect tire repairs are hazardous and should never be done.
Guidelines for tire repairs should be based on the local safety standards or criteria published by the industry association in each country. For example, the following information is extracted from the Safety Standards for Automobile Tires issued by The Japan Automobile Tire Manufacturers' Association.

Unrepairable damage
Tires having any of the following damage conditions must not be repaired and the tire should be discarded. (The following list is not an exhaustive list of unrepairable damage.)
  (1) Less than 1 .6mm of tread depth remaining and/or local excessive tread wear exposing the breaker or belt.
  (2) Tires with damages to the shoulders, the sidewalls and the bead areas.
  (3) Tires with any of the following types of damage:
    a) extensive rubber cracking reaching the casing
    b) separation
    c) casing break-up or damage caused by severe under-inflation service
    d) rubber that is appreciably aged or degraded by oil or chemicals
    e) any damage to the inner liner of a tubeless tire

Repairable damage
Tires may be repaired if the damage is in the tread area and doe not exceed the following limitations.
  (1) External damage in the rubber only and not reaching the casing.
  (2) Punctures or other penetrating damage can be repaired in accordance with other criteria as to size, number and location of the damage.
